"All hail the supermodel!"

That was the theme of Monday night's Costume Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Musuem of Art guests, hosted by Kate Moss and bad-boy designer Marc Jacobs.

A multigenerational who's who of magazine cover girls—from Lauren Hutton to Gisele to Tyra Banks—and Hollywood clotheshorses wore wild creations from today's hottest designers, many of whom accompanied their models on the red carpet.

Want to know how serious they were about protecting their wares?

On a drizzly night, after Heidi Klum was grazed by a few sprinkles of rain, half a dozen suited men immediately started fussing over her gown, among them its creator, Gilles Mendel.

And no sooner had Karolina Kurkova's Richard Chai bracelet snapped off, than there was its designer swooping in from nowhere to snap it back on.

Even some of the guys had problems.

Diane Kruger came to the aid of boyfriend Joshua Jackson: "I tied his bow tie, and it's quite difficult. I had to look it up on YouTube!"
