A woman from Michigan's Thumb region who was one of the nation's oldest people has died at age 112.

Bea Cooper of Harbor Beach died Monday.

Gerontology Research Group, which uses census and other data to validate and compile records of extreme old age, says Cooper was the second-oldest Michigan resident behind a 113-year-old Detroit resident.

The organization tells The Bay City Times that Cooper was the 24th-oldest person in the U.S.

She was born Feb. 3, 1897, in nearby Port Hope.

She's survived by a daughter and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach, a Lake Huron community about 105 miles north of Detroit.
