A female soldier found dead of a gunshot wound in her barracks in San Antonio has been identified as Pvt. 1st Class Jaynie May Askew.

The 43-year-old was found lying on her bed at Fort Sam Houston Tuesday evening with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the base reported.

A .45 caliber handgun and apparent suicide note also were found at the scene.

Askew had been living in the training barracks for the 32nd Medical Brigade, an open room that holds an average of about 60 soldiers training to be combat medics.

Prior to arriving at Fort Sam Houston, she had served as a military police soldier with the Arizona National Guard.
