The Coast Guard is searching for a 40-year-old man who tumbled into the ocean when a basket that was transferring him between ships snapped.

A Coast Guard statement says a helicopter and a patrol boat were searching Thursday morning some 70 miles south of San Diego.

The man had been on the oil tanker BH Thames, which was built last year and flies the flag of Singapore.

He was switching to another vessel Wednesday night when the basket broke and he fell in the water.
