OAKWOOD, Ill. – Central Illinois authorities have identified a Texas man who was shot to death by police after he allegedly led officers on a 35-mile chase before charging them with a machete.
The Champaign County Sheriff's Department say the man was 23-year-old Ocuwatofumi O. Kaiyewu of Missouri City, Texas. He was shot to death about 11 p.m. Monday on Interstate 74 in Oakwood, about 25 miles east of Champaign.
Authorities say the chase began after he assaulted a police officer during a traffic stop in Villa Grove, 15 miles south of Champaign.
Authorities say Kaiyewu drove north into Urbana and then east to Oakwood. Police say they disabled the car and Kaiyewu got out swinging the machete.
Officers say they shot him after a stun gun proved ineffective.
