A Peruvian man was rushed to the hospital after he complained of severe pain from an erection that had lasted eight days, health24.com reported.
Dr. Nelson Carrasco, a surgeon at the hospital in Sullana, Peru, said the man, a 53-year-old farmer, did not take any stimulants to help him achieve his erection. He was not under the influence of alcohol.
The farmer’s identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, Carrasco said, but he suffers from priapism, a condition that occurs when blood becomes trapped in the penis and depletes oxygen levels. Blood low in oxygen can be toxic to surrounding tissues, damaging or destroying them. The result can be disfiguring or permanent.
Carrasco operated on the man, but he is still trying to figure out the reason for the patient’s condition so that it does not happen again.
