UNIONTOWN, Pa. – A western Pennsylvania woman is suing McDonald's saying her 11-year-old grandson was scalded by hot coffee in a cup served with a loose lid in a drive-through lane.
Cheryl Cornair of Washington Township, Fayette County, says the boy was burned May 24 at the McDonald's on Route 201 near Belle Vernon.
Cornair says in her lawsuit that a server handed a cardboard drink holder to the boy, who suffered second-degree burns when the coffee spilled on his left leg.
A McDonald's spokesman says he cannot comment on the lawsuit, but says customer safety is the restaurant's top priority.
An 82-year-old New Mexico woman sued McDonald's for $2.7 million when she was scalded by coffee in 1994. An appeal reduced that to $640,000 and she later settled for an undisclosed amount.
