Authorities are investigating how a murder suspect got a 6-inch metal spike he used to attack a California judge during his trial.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's office released photos of the handcrafted weapon on Thursday.

A Lodi police detective fatally shot 29-year-old murder suspect David Paradiso after he left the witness stand and attacked San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Cinda Fox on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office says in a statement the attack occurred while bailiffs were removing Paradiso's mother and brother from the Stockton courtroom for causing a disruption.

The statement says the weapon was found in Paradiso's hand.

Fox was treated for minor injuries.
