Police identified a woman found dead in her Atlanta penthouse Tuesday night as “ground-breaking” cancer researcher Dr. Eugenia Calle, WSB-TV reported.
Police said they believe Calle died from “blunt force trauma,” the result of a homicide, but they have not yet determined a motive.
“There did appear to be some signs of a struggle,” Lt. Keith Meadows told the TV station.
Calle, 57, had been the director of Analytic Epidemiology for the American Cancer Society for the past 15 years. Also an adjunct professor in epidemiology at Emory University, Calle had made important strides in cancer research, linking cancer and obesity.
Calle’s fiancé found her body around 11 p.m. Tuesday, but police think she may have been dead for up to 12 hours before that.
