Police in northeastern Pennsylvania say a faulty gun thwarted a man's plan to kill his estranged wife and commit suicide.

Investigators in Scranton say 48-year-old William Krause talked his estranged wife into entering a bedroom with him on Thursday, saying he wanted to show her something.

Officers say he handed her an apologetic letter and told her a murder-suicide was the only way they could be together forever.

However, Marie Krause told police the gun only clicked. She said that after a struggle she got her husband to call one of their sons to come help.

Krause was arraigned Saturday and is jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing. There was no immediate word if he had a lawyer to speak for him.
