Surgeons at Baltimore's Union Memorial Hospital have successfully removed a grapefruit-sized tumor from a 13-year-old Haitian boy's armpit.

Hospital spokeswoman Debra Schindler says the tumor was removed Monday with a second operation performed Tuesday to cover the site where the tumor had been. Schindler says Osly St. Preux was able to move his fingers and arm after the removal.

Dr. Mojtaba Gashti says he first met St. Preux during a trip to Haiti in 2005 when he removed a cyst under the boy's right arm. When he returned in May, he found a tumor had grown where the cyst had been.

Gashti, the hospital's head of vascular surgery, spent much of the past year working to bring Osly and his mother to Baltimore for the surgery.
