Firefighters from New York's Rockland County are volunteering at fire departments in Israel.

Monsey Fire Commissioner Nathan Rothschild says the New York firefighters want to relieve pressure on busy fire departments in Israel hot spots. They also are filling in for firefighters drafted as army reserves.

Rothschild's son, Gary, was one of eight Orthodox Jewish firefighters who left Tuesday from the Monsey, Spring Valley and Hillcrest departments.

Nathan Rothschild plans to be part of another crew going next week.

Funding comes from private donors, family and friends, as well as some from Jewish organizations and synagogues.
