A Canadian company that produces the Stork Craft line of baby cribs is voluntarily recalling more than 500,000 cribs in the United States due to a potential suffocation risk, authorities said.
The cribs — made by British Columbia-based Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. — were sold at major retailers like Wal-Mart and J.C. Penney between May 2000 and January 2009 for up to $400, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
"The metal support brackets used to support the crib mattress and mattress board can crack and break," the CPSC said on its Web site. "When one or more support brackets break, the mattress can collapse and create a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib rails, in which a child can become entrapped and suffocate."
At least 10 incidents have been reported in which one or more of the support brackets have collapsed, the CPSC said.
Roughly 494,000 cribs were also being recalled in Canada, Reuters reports.
CPSC officials urged anyone using the affected cribs to contact Stork Craft at (866) 361-3321 for a free replacement kit.
