Emergency rooms in the Annapolis area are seeing an unusual number of patients suffering from a stomach bug.

Medical officials at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Baltimore Washington Medical Center say the symptoms include vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. While the illness is not considered serious, officials say infants and elderly patients should seek medical attention.

Dr. Joel Klein at BWMC says the number of cases seems to be out of the ordinary but it is not an epidemic. The illness can pass in one night or last as long as a week.

Doctors say the best way to avoid catching or spreading the illness is regular hand-washing and avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
