Police say an illegal immigrant was beaten and stabbed by smugglers when he couldn't pay them more money for getting him across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sgt. Art Campa said the 32-year-old immigrant was being treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital on Sunday after he escaped his captors and went for help.

Campa says police, who are assisting the Border Patrol investigation, detained two people at a San Diego trailer park early Sunday. Authorities say they also found a second victim being held there.

The first victim told police he was beaten, stabbed in the leg and held by his smugglers for several days after he was unable to pay them more money.

A Border Patrol spokesman said he had no information about the case.
