Rescuers are trying to save an injured manatee in Key West.

Marine mammal rescue crews from the Dolphin Research Center and the Miami Seaquarium were working to save the manatee Thursday and Friday but were unable to catch it before dark.

The manatee was spotted by boaters at Sunshine Key Marina early Thursday morning with several fresh boat-propeller scars on its head.

Crews tried for hours to get the manatee on the boat ramp, where it could be transported into a waiting truck.

Dolphin Research Center spokeswoman Mary Stella said the animal likely would need to be brought to the Miami Seaquarium for treatment of its injuries because it is the nearest facility equipped to handle manatees.
