When Christmas Brings Out the Worst in People

The events in Mumbai this week might snap us out of our complacency in thinking that the threat of terrorism is behind us. It isn't.

The calculated and cold-blooded murders of innocent civilians this week in India grimly reminds us that we live in a dangerous world of hate and violence.

Tensions between Pakistan and India were already strong, and this will only make it worse. I've traveled in both countries, and less than two years ago I was saying that the real worry we should have is terror cells from Pakistan more than even Iraq or Iran.

Mumbai was a logical target because of its strategic importance as a financial and technology center — representing a growing modernism and escalating prosperity for its people. Terrorists target nerve centers of the economy, transportation, or government.

But horrors are not limited to terrorist activity. Sadly, the day after Thanksgiving, one of the most horrible stories to come forth came not from the hands of terrorists, but from Christmas shoppers, who literally broke down the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart, and trampled a 34-year-old worker to death and injured a pregnant woman caught in the stampede.

The woman was rushed to the hospital and her baby will be survive. People literally stepped on and over the employee even as he lay on the floor gasping for his last breaths so they could rush off to electronics and get a bargain on a flat screen TV or cheap computer game.

Do you think the animals playing the role of shoppers will still enjoy their bargain buys knowing that they killed someone to get it?

Christmas can bring out the best in people, but sadly, for others, it brings out the worst.

Imagine killing an innocent employee at a store by trampling him and not stopping to assist, all in the name of a holiday which is about the birth of one, who himself died to give us peace on earth, good will toward men.
