So this transition from Bush to Barack reminds me of a time in grade school when an unpopular, older teacher finally retired and was replaced by a younger dude. Everyone loved the new guy — mainly because he wasn't the old guy.
Eight years older than the students, he had cool hair. And being unknown made it easy for us to import our own pleasant feelings into this empty vessel.
And when he disciplined students — often as harshly as the old dude — they seemed to enjoy it. Well, at least I did. (He used an orange in an old sock).
Of course, Obama is no empty vessel. Fact is, if we believe the world, this last election has enabled America to regain its moral authority, a commodity squandered during the Bush presidency — thanks to the Iraq war, Abu Ghraib and the last Madonna tour.
This is great news! We're the good guys again and everyone from Tehran to Togo loves us.
So what can we do with our country's resurgent moral authority? Lots.
See, moral authority isn't there to allow America to do what the world wants, it's there to allow America to do what it wants.
Meaning, if the world really loves Barack Obama, then they're going to be in for a shock when he starts acting like Bush. And he will, because although Bush is gone, we're still the only country with balls and we've still got Iran, Russia, Hugo Chavez, Al Qaeda and of course, Belgium, to contend with.
When Obama inevitably flexes military might — if only to prove he's more than a pretty face — will the world still love him?
Who cares? That's the beauty of moral authority.
And if you disagree with me, then you sir are worse than Hitler.
