Authorities say four people were killed and four others injured in a 13-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in the Mojave Desert.

The California Highway Patrol said seven big rigs and six other vehicles were involved in the pileup at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday amid high winds near Newberry Springs about 23 miles east of Barstow.

CHP Lt. Chet Yun said three of the dead were in a car that was crushed by the trailer of a big rig.

The names of the four dead have not been released.

Authorities said two people with serious injuries were flown by helicopter to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and two others with minor injuries were taken by Ambulance to a Barstow hospital.

CHP Officer Richard Vega winds of nearly 50 mph could well have played a role in the crash but the cause remained under investigation.
