LAHOMA, Okla. – A woman driving a pickup truck veered off a highway and slammed into two fuel pumps at a gas station, causing a massive explosion that killed the woman and caused a blaze that could be seen for miles, fire officials said.
The woman was westbound on U.S. 412 shortly before midnight Friday when her pickup truck veered off the road and crashed into the fuel pumps at the Lahoma Corner Store, said Lahoma Fire Chief David Wedel.
"We don't know if she lost control or what," Wedel said. "But she plowed into the fuel pumps, and we had a couple of explosions and about three different fires."
The woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene, Wedel said.
No one else was injured, and a clerk inside the store managed to hit an emergency shut-off switch to keep the blaze from spreading.
One of the burning fuel pumps was knocked about 100 feet away and caused two small secondary fires, Wedel said. The fuel pump island, the canopy and the two pumps were destroyed.
Responding firefighters from nearby Drummond reported being able to see the fire's glow from five miles away, he said.
