A Long Island man accused of putting cyanide in his estranged wife's coffee is being held without bail.

David Steeves pleaded not guilty Wednesday to attempted murder.

Prosecutors say he poisoned Maureen Steeves on Oct. 18. The 41-year-old Center Moriches woman is on life support.

Her 43-year-old estranged husband was arrested Tuesday. Defense lawyer Joseph Hanshe says his client went to court "very frightened" and worried about his two teenage children.

Hanshe and prosecutors aren't sure who's caring for the children.
