West Hartford police say a gang or neighborhood dispute may have been what sparked the shootings of four people at a baby shower over the weekend.

Detective Capt. Paul Melanson says the four victims are recovering at area hospitals.

Witnesses told police that anywhere from eight to 20 shots were fired late Saturday night outside the United Auto Workers Hall, which was rented for the baby shower. Authorities say trouble began inside the hall, a fight erupted outside and several people fired handguns.

No arrests have been made. Melanson says most of the 60 people at the shower were less than forthcoming about what happened and some of them appeared to be affiliated with gangs based on their tattoos and clothing.

Police say several children at the baby shower were unharmed.
