The U.S. military says five people have been killed and a pregnant woman wounded in an armed attack on the home of a U.S.-backed Sunni group north of Baghdad.

The U.S. military says the shooting occurred Saturday on the southern outskirts of Balad, the site of a major American military base.

Masked gunmen came out of nearby palm groves and attacked the home of a local leader of the Sons of Iraq and then escaped. Sons of Iraq is the term for Sunnis who turned against al-Qaida and joined forces with the Americans.

The pregnant woman was wounded in the raid and was later taken to a U.S. military hospital.
