Iraqi police say a bomber has killed a prominent Sunni mosque preacher in the former insurgent stronghold of Fallujah.

A police official says the bomber killed himself when he struck the imam at the entrance of his house and no other casualties were reported.

The official says the slain imam Sulaiman al-Jamaili was a member of Iraq's main Sunni Arab political party in the Anbar province city.

Friday's attack comes amid a power struggle between members of the main Iraqi Islamic Party and the local Sunni group that turned against Al Qaeda ahead of planned provincial elections.

An Al Qaeda in Iraq umbrella group also called for the murder of all members of the IIP in an Internet message posted last month.
