A 5-year-old boy sitting on his grandmother's lap was killed after she crashed the car into a home in Antelope, north of Sacramento.

The California Highway Patrol says Alexander Martinez died when the car's air bags deployed.

He wasn't in a child seat as required by law. Nor was his grandmother wearing a seat belt.

CHP Officer Lizz Dutton says his grandmother, 52-year-old Joni Kelley, was driving on a suspended license. She was critically injured.

Dutton says Kelley was parking outside her home when she stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake Tuesday.

Her 1996 Toyota Camry traveled 40 feet into the wall of an empty home several driveways away.

Authorities say they don't know why Kelley accelerated the car or why the child was sitting on her lap.
