German authorities were investigating the discovery of a man’s left arm that washed up on a riverbank, TheLocal.de reported Sunday.

Fisherman in Cologne found the limb on Friday on the bank of the Rhine River. A police spokeswoman told TheLocal.de that it was thought to belong to a man due to its hairiness.

Forensic scientists, who suggested the arm had been in the water for about a week, were securing fingerprint and DNA samples.

Detectives said Sunday that all possibilities remain open — including suicide and murder.
