Two doctors temporarily lost their medical licenses Tuesday after they allegedly botched an appendix surgery, which led to the death of a 28-year-old woman four years ago, India’s Telegraph reported Wednesday.
During an inquiry, Debashish Mitra, a gynecologist, and Bikash Kumar Ghosh, a primary care physician, denied conducting the surgery, but the West Bengal Medical Council found them guilty.
The council said they weren’t qualified to perform the surgery, since neither was a general surgeon or anesthetist.
“Their names were removed from the council’s register for two years after the charges of negligence were proved,” Dilip Ghosh, the council’s register, announced.
Sunanda Ghosh, who lived in Ukilpara, India, was admitted to a hospital owned by Mitra in August 2004 with severe abdominal pain. After it was determined she had appendicitis, the two doctors performed the surgery and she died three days later.
