Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has knocked Rupert Murdoch off Vanity Fair’s annual list of the world’s 100 most powerful and influential people, the Daily Telegraph reported Wenesday.

It is Putin’s first mention in the magazine’s “New Establishment,” which it says “represents a global, moveable band of thinkers, owners, creators, and buyers who are the tastemakers, trendsetters, opinion formers and agenda creators in the worlds of politics, entertainment, media, business, technology, and fashion.”

The 55-year-old Russian leader has most recently been involved in a war with Georgia over the breakaway province of South Ossetia that has sparked international outrage.

Putin stepped down as President of the world’s largest country in May, but remains the de facto leader.

The West has condemned Russia’s actions in Georgia, as well as Putin for eroding free speech and allegedly rigging the May election, but he maintains an 80 percent approval rating at home, the Telegraph reported.

Other newcomers to the 2008 list are Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai (number seven), Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (number nine), Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (25), British artist Damien Hirst (31) and Hollywood producer/director Judd Apatow (58).

Rising power players are Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, up to number eight from last year's 30, and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, now at number 33, up from 50 in 2007, the Telegraph reported.

Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney have slipped in the rankings, falling from 14 to 43, and from 27 to 55, respectively.

The list is scheduled to appear in the October issue of the magazine.
