The countless pictures of airbrushed models with stick-thin figures in magazines and billboards is taking its toll on American women, United Press International reported Tuesday.

The report, titled “Beauty at Any Cost,” was written by non-profit officials at YWCA USA, an organization that reprensents women.

It indicated that young women and girls are spending more money and going to unhealthy extremes to achieve an image that is unattainable.

These costs include physical harm, including smoking to lose weight, risky cosmetic surgeries, low self-esteem and a competitive “mean girls culture,” said Tracy Lakatua, YWCA USA board chairwoman.

The report also detailed the health risks of unsafe ingredients used in cosmetics and the consequences of job discrimination based on appearances.
