A northeast Georgia man has been charged with holding his wife and four children captive for three years inside their mobile home.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle says 36-year-old Raymond Daniel Thurmond was arrested Tuesday when he showed up for work. He has been charged with rape, child abuse and false imprisonment.

He is awaiting a bond hearing and does not yet have an attorney.

Carlisle says the wife and children had been allowed to leave just once since 2005. A 14-year-old once attended first grade, but the other children had never been to school.

Neighbors didn't know anyone lived in the single-wide trailer. Carlisle says investigators found no food in the home.

He says the family was discovered when the woman was finally able to leave the house and call for help.
