The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says an Arizona man died while snorkeling after he scattered his mother's ashes in the Florida Keys.

According to the sheriff's office, Phillip Viator's family members found him face down in the water at White Bank Dry Rocks on Sunday. The Coast Guard took the 55-year-old man to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the family decided to jump into the water after scattering the ashes but Viator, of Mesa, Ariz., quickly began having trouble breathing.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
