State media say a motorized ferry sank in a river in Burma's cyclone-battered Irrawaddy delta, leaving 38 people dead.

The New Light of Myanmar newspaper reports that the ship — with 82 on board — went down in the Yway river Tuesday after water entered its stern section. The newspaper did not say exactly how the accident happened.

The paper said that the remaining 44 persons were rescued.

The delta was largely devastated by Cyclone Nargis which struck Burma, renamed Myanmar by the ruling military junta, in early May, killing more than 84,000 people.
