A car bomb killed two people, including a child, and wounded 70 others in the northwestern Iraqi city of Mosul, a security official said Tuesday.

The police officer, who works in the provincial operations center, said the attacker struck a market area in the city's center near a police station.

The 70 wounded included seven policemen, 12 women and 10 children, he added.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information.

Mosul is the site of ongoing U.S.-Iraqi military operations against Al Qaeda in Iraq.
