Garden City residents are being told to take a good look at their money before they spend it.

Several phony $20 bills have shown up around town in recent weeks, according to police. Sgt. Michael Reagle said the bills are being used even though they have an obvious flaw, the back side is printed upside down.

Reports of the fake $20 bills began last week. In May, police in Garden City and Dodge City got reports of counterfeit $100 bills, which were real money modified to look like larger denominations.

Officials aren't sure if the two types of counterfeit bills are connected.

Police have contacted the Secret Service, which has jurisdiction over counterfeiting cases, Reagle said.
