The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan says it has killed about 17 militants in southern Afghanistan.

A coalition statement said the fighting began when militants ambushed Afghan and coalition forces patrolling Thursday near Tirin Kowt, the main town in Uruzgan province.

It said the militants retreated under fire to a fortified position near an orchard that was targeted by an airstrike.

The coalition said about 100 militants attacked the same patrol on Friday morning. The attack prompted another airstrike.

Also Friday, police said militants fired a rocket at a vehicle carrying Romanian troops in Zabul province and killed one soldier. NATO confirmed the death of a soldier but did not disclose the nationality.
