Traffic was snarled on Interstate 94 in southern Wisconsin early Wednesday after police discovered the body of a motorist.

The man had gotten out of his disabled car off the southbound lane about 2:30 a.m. and tried to run across the road, the Wisconsin State Patrol said.

The patrol said the man was hit by a semitrailer truck as he tried to cross the northbound lanes. The truck remained at the scene while troopers investigated.

Southern Wisconsin experienced heavy fog early Wednesday, according to MyFOXMilwaukee.com.

The patrol shut down both sides of the freeway near Highway 20 for more than four hours.

Authorities have not yet released the dead man's name.
