A man in Brisbane, Australia is suing an American contact solution manufacturer, claiming the solution caused his partial blindness, the Australian Associated Press is reporting.
Advanced Medical Optics recalled its Complete Moisture Plus solution in May 2007 after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked the solution to a heightened risk for a rare eye infection called acanthamoeba keratitis.
Thirty-three-year-old Tristan Mirapuri filed a lawsuit in Orange County, California claiming he lost vision in his right eye a few months after using the solution, his lawyer Damian Scattini told AAP.
Acanthamoeba keratitis is a local infection of the eye that typically occurs in healthy persons and can result in permanent visual impairment or blindness, according to the CDC's Web site. Improper use of contact lenses and not cleaning lenses properly are cited as possible causes of the disease.
Several U.S. residents have also filed suit against the company.
