A tractor trailer carrying a 10,000-gallon load of liquid asphalt overturned about 9:30 a.m. on Georgia 65 northbound at White Sulphur Road, forcing closure of the road while the Georgia Department of Transportation cleaned up the mess.

We are on the scene and the tractor trailer has been uprighted," said Teri Pope of the DOT public relations staff. "The asphalt is contained, but it has hardened."

Pope said a milling machine was being used to grind up the asphalt for removal by dump trucks.

"We hope to have the road open by 4 this afternoon," Pope said.

The closure only effected northbound traffic. The only problem for southbound traffic was rubberneckers, she said.
