Our Lady's Children's Hospital, the largest child hospital in Ireland, has admitted removing the wrong kidney from a patient during surgery, according to the U.K.'s ITN news agency.

The Dublin hospital did not release details of the child's age, gender or when the operation took place for reasons of privacy.

The hospital said it has apologized to the family and an inquiry into the incident is under way, ITN reported.

A hospital spokeswoman said a copy of the internal review would be given to the child's family upon completion.

She said the family has chosen to continue using Our Lady's Children's Hospital for follow-up care.
