A clash between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli troops in the West Bank has ended.

The incident occurred Sunday at a checkpoint near the city of Nablus.

Several hundred protesters approached the Hawara checkpoint and scuffled with troops. The soldiers responded with tear gas and stun grenades and detained two people. There were no serious injuries reported.

The army says it used only non-lethal measures to disperse the crowd. It also says anyone who was detained has been released.

The protest marked "Land Day," a date observed mainly by Arabs inside Israel to protest land seizures and government discrimination.

The disturbance came as visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders to move ahead peace negotiations.
