By 1970 the Vietnam War was nearing its end. America was turning the fight over to the South Vietnamese, but departure without victory is a dirty business. Even with a massive troop withdrawal underway, thousands of men were arriving “in country” for their tour of duty.
In April, the 101st Airborne Division, known as the famed "Screaming Eagles," began to build a mountaintop fortress or firebase known as Ripcord. Surrounded by rugged jungle, the base relied on a helicopter lifeline to get supplies in and the wounded out. But lurking in that jungle was General Vo Nguyen Giap’s battle-hardened North Vietnamese Army. And they outnumbered the Americans by more than four to one.
The 23-day battle that ensued was one of the bloodiest of the war and one of the least known. In this riveting episode of “War Stories with Oliver North,” you’ll hear from those who fought and see exclusive pictures and rare footage.
Despite the politicians at home labeling the war a “lost cause, ” the men of the 101st fought like lions and honored the bond of brotherhood. They fought to save the man to their left and the man to their right.
Don't miss this gripping episode of "War Stories with Oliver North."
