DETROIT – The Wayne County prosecutor says she will announce in two weeks whether to bring perjury charges against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide.
Kym Worthy is investigating claims that Kilpatrick and one-time chief of staff Christine Beatty lied under oath during a whistleblowers' trial last summer when they denied having a romantic relationship.
A perjury conviction for lying under oath could bring up to 15 years' imprisonment and force Kilpatrick to relinquish his hold on the mayor's office.
Worthy announced her investigation on Jan. 25 after the Detroit Free Press reported on sexually explicit text messages left on Beatty's city-issued pager in 2002 and 2003.
She said Wednesday she expects to make the announcement sometime during the week of March 24.
