CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A lockdown at the University of Northern Iowa has ended with a suspect in custody.
All the dorms at Dancer Hall were locked down Tuesday afternoon while authorities investigated a report of a gunman planning to confront a student.
Officials say the suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested Tuesday night in Des Moines. He is accused of threatening to confront his girlfriend at Dancer Hall with a gun. It was not clear whether a gun was recovered.
Jim O'Connor, a university spokesman, says the lockdown began after the man's girlfriend reported the threat to authorities. The university then issued a campuswide alert and advised students to stay away from Dancer Hall, Bender Hall and Towers Center.
Cedar Falls and campus police surrounded Dancer Hall for several hours and searched its rooms for a weapon or suspect. No one was injured. Officials say about 500 students live in the hall.
O'Connor says the suspect's name and other details will be released Wednesday.
