Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has requested that a Japanese businessman be extradited from Saipan to face charges of murdering his wife in Los Angeles more than two decades ago.

The governor on Wednesday signed a requisition for Kazuyoshi Miura. It asks the governor of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to send Miura from Saipan.

The 60-year-old Miura was arrested there last month on a warrant charging him with having his wife killed to collect life insurance.

Miura claimed that in 1981 robbers wounded him and shot his wife, who died the following year.

He was convicted of murder in Japan, but that was overturned.
