A 25-year-old driver who was answering a text message when she struck and killed a teenager on a bicycle will spend four years in the slammer, The Daily Mail reported.
Kiera Coultas, a British hotel manager, was speeding and replying to a message on her cell phone from her estranged husband Feb. 7, 2007, when she plowed her BMW into Jordan Wickington, 19, according to the paper.
Wickington, a scaffolder, had stopped his bike at a traffic light and wasn't wearing a helmet.
The teen died later that day in the hospital.
Coultas admitted going 45 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone in Southampton, England.
The mother of a 4-year-old girl was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to four years behind bars and isn't allowed to drive for five years. Before the fatal crash, she'd already been slapped with three speeding tickets.
In court, Wickington's mother Christine said her family's life had "forever changed" that day.
"I held his hand and stroked his face as he slipped away," she said in her victim's statement. "I felt as if someone had reached inside and ripped out part of my heart and soul."
