RIVERDALE, Md. – Charges have been filed in a school bus accident that left the driver and several students hurt Wednesday, police told FOX News.
So far, two charges were filed in the Washington, D.C.-area roll-over crash, according to Prince George's County Police in Maryland. There was no word on whether more were coming.
Authorities told The Associated Press that the driver made a turn too fast Wednesday morning, injuring five children and causing the bus to flip.
The driver will be charged for taking the turn at a "speed greater than reasonable," said Cpl. Stephen Pacheco, a spokesman for Prince George's County police. The specific charges have not yet been determined.
Forty-four students from William Wirt Middle School in Riverdale, Md., were on the bus when it overturned a few blocks from the school shortly before 9 a.m., Pacheco said.
Five of the students were taken to area hospitals with injuries that Pacheco described as "bumps and bruises." The remaining students and the driver also were hospitalized for evaluations as a precaution.
No one appeared to be seriously wounded in the spill.
At least one student was taken to the hospital with back injuries, D.C. police told FOX News. The driver had the most serious injuries of anyone on board, but they were not life-threatening, authorities said.
Four Minnesota students were killed in a Feb. 19 school bus crash, and a Guatemalan woman illegally driving the van that plowed into them has been charged with homicide.
