A 12-year-old Boy Scout has suffered a fatal fall from a sheer granite cliff in California's Yosemite National Park.

Park spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman says the Modesto boy died Saturday afternoon when he fell about 300 feet while his group was hiking toward Upper Yosemite Fall.

Freeman says the boy and another Scout were hiking in front of their group and ventured off the trail toward a steep drop above Columbia Rock. The second Scout wasn't injured.

The victim's name has not been released, and Yosemite officials have yet to confirm which Boy Scout troop he belonged to.
