A 12-year-old British girl who reportedly was a contender for the 2012 Olympics was crushed to death in a horse-riding accident, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Shannon Bloomfield was riding her horse Poppy at an indoor jumping event when the horse didn't negotiate the fence and it fell awkwardly, trapping her, the newspaper said.

"Everybody had such high hopes for her," family friend Andy Fortune told the Daily Telegraph. "People were even talking about the Olympics in 2012. She was so talented."

Bloomfield was considered a prospect for the London Olympics after qualifying for the British Show Jumping Championships in Wales two years ago.
