A new survey says that nearly 9 percent of inmates at the Utah State Prison have been victims of nonconsensual sex acts.

The survey is mandated by the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003.

The national average was nearly 5 percent.

The Utah State Prison did not make the Top 10 list of facilities with the highest rate of individual prisoners reporting being victimized. However, when the survey asked inmates how many times they had been victimized, the Utah State Prison reached the Top 10 for the prevalence of nonconsensual sex acts.

Federal researchers interviewed 228 of the more than 3,700 inmates at the Utah State Prison. Neither inmates nor prison staff knew the subject matter of the survey before it was conducted.
