A Cleveland-area car chase came to a dramatic end when the driver of a stolen van veered off a bridge, plunging 75 feet into the Black River, and lived, MyFOXCleveland.com reported.

The man, suspected of stealing a van in Lorain, Ohio, was lucky to have survived the steep drop off an Interstate 90 bridge, authorities told MyFOXCleveland.

He was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital, but his condition wasn’t known and his identity was not immediately disclosed. The suspect, the vehicle’s only occupant, was conscious and communicating with rescuers from the Elyria Fire Department, MyFOXCleveland reported.

The van was still floating in the river, near where it drove off the westbound bridge between Route 57 and Route 254.

The suspect’s girlfriend told police that he had fled in her van after an argument. Authorities are investigating.

The chase and subsequent crash into the river caused a traffic backup of more than a mile on that portion of the interstate.
